The last time I had hot pot was in Seoul – where it’s called shabushabu, if you ever want to order it fyi – so returning to Sheffield last year and finding out a hot pot place had opened up quite literally a stones throw away from the main uni campus was music to my ears. Though we’re all well aware that I didn’t get out much so I’ve only got around to trying it now.
As part of an EASsoc social that I organised, but I was eager to try it out. Individual hot pot? All the yes, please.
Hot pot is probably about as divisive as marmite, you either love it or you hate it, there is no real in between. The dish itself is basically allll the things cooked in one massive pot, and then you share it with those you’re eating hot pot with.
Yepyep however, offers individual hotpot, which immediately scored a massive yes from me. No fighting over sauce bases, no vegetarians not eating because of meat content, no fish haters shunning the fish. It’s a really great place to have the hot pot experience without any of the hassle. Plus everything is prepared from fresh, and the staff are always on-hand to help.
So, individual hot pot, how does it work? Well, you order the soup base that you’d like, and then the set that goes in your hot pot. The vegetable platter that comes with the meat sets is the same as the basic vegetable platter, fyi. Then you add what you want to your soup, when you want it. It’s incredibly individual, and means that there is no fighting about who gets the last bit of meat. Endlessly frustrating, lemme tell ya.
Yep yep itself is a really small restaurant, but the staff are lovely and attentive, and the portions are definitely worth the £8.60. You get so, so much food. It can be quite hard to talk to a group, as the set up is a bar style, but it is interesting to watch the chefs prepare food. I totally didn’t get distracted and burn things. Honest.
It’s such a nice change to have somewhere like this in Sheffield, and so close to the uni, as many of the other restaurants that do hot pot are so damned expensive, and deciding on one pot for a group is so frustrating, so this is a place that I’d definitely recommend, especially since they do take out too. Winning.
Have you ever tried hot pot before?

Ooh! I have never tried it before. I might have to look around to check if some local restaurants offer it.

Sounds very interesting! Although I'm such a boring old fart with food that I'd probably want to like it but end up hating it 🙁 Although I do love Marmite…Meg | A Little Twist Of…
