Today I’m Nakd.
I’m not the world’s best person at remembering when meal times should be, despite the fact that I am usually hungry most of the day, because hey there fast metabolism. Couple that with not liking to eat large portions, and you have basically ‘little and often’ down to a tee. When I was younger, mum and dad tried to combat this with the likes of cereal bars and trail mix to see me through from breakfast to lunch to home time in school, but holy hell do they contain a lot of rather unnecessary ingredients and a fuck tonne of sugar.
So when Natural Balance Foods got in touch asking if I’d like to try some Nakd bars out, I was intrigued, to say the least. Unsure I’d like them, but willing to give them a go, I accepted, since healthy cereal bars have been on my ‘list of things to try’ for quite a while.
Verdict?
I surprised myself in actually liking them? I’m not entirely sure what I was expecting, but flavoured bars that are actually true to flavour, and not some vile, ‘banana’ medicine lie, was apparently not it. (Probably due to the dates + cashews + health = ewwwwww equation years of sugar marketing have sold us… ) But they are!!! True to flavour!!! Even ‘Bakewell Tart’. Especially Bakewell Tart, actually.
Nakd bars get their ‘healthy cereal bar‘ label by being made of as few ingredients as possible. Each bar is mostly made up of dates (the fruit, not the often awkward first ones), cashews (soz if you’re allergic to nuts), and raisins, with one other natural ingredient depending on the bar. No unnecessary sugars or syrups, dairy free, wheat/gluten free, never baked and 100% vegan – and more – as someone who is trying to move onto a clean eating plan these little bars are actually something that I am really on board with. Bonus points for Natural Balance Foods being a homegrown brand, too.
The nakd mixed case* was the selection that found its way into my post box, which gave me a brilliant variety to try. Top of the box for me was Gingerbread, with Berry Delight and Pecan Pie tying for a very close second. My least favourite are those with coffee flavouring, but I am really really really not keen on coffee, so that was to be expected. The others are definitely multiple ‘ok hand sign’ emoji status.
I also love how easy these are to transport. I can chuck one in my bag to take with me to class and it doesn’t really matter if it gets a little smushed, because all the ingredients are pressed together. There’s none of that disappointing, super messy crumbling, or the slightest hint of a possible melting incident on those rare warm days we get. So my bag, work, and fingers all stay safe, and I get noms. Winning.
So yeah. 10/10 to the Nakd bars I so badly misjudged before trying – and sorry for thinking you were gonna taste terrible. You don’t.
Have you tried Nakd bars before – what’s your favourite flavour if you have!
