I found a pair of dungarees I’ve fallen in love with and never, ever want to be separated from.
Which is saying something because generally, when I find and or buy dungarees, I look like an angry toddler.
Not saying that these don’t also make me look like an angry toddler, but they’re also soft and comfy and perfect for the next two seasons, as well as any down days where joggers or pj’s aren’t entirely appropriate.
It took me many shops and a lot of changing rooms to find this pair of black full-length dungarees. I settled on this pair from h&m, but I also looked through Newlook, Topshop, and Forever21. If you’re looking for this sort of style my advice is to definitely try them all on before you buy so you’re not having to send back multiple orders online or return in store.
I’d also suggest definitely having some kind of idea what you’d want them to look like on. I was desperate for a black pair, but wanted them to look either slightly oversized, or with a relaxed fit leg so they weren’t skin tight. This meant that I wasn’t faffing around trying on things that weren’t close to what I was after. Kinda like a job spec but for jeans.
The pair that sparked this whole need for black dungarees was on an outfit post from either Instagram or Pinterest – and then Han said she’d seen something similar in Urban Outfitters. My current #brokegrad status means that UO is a little out of my price range at the minute, so the hunt was on for As Close As I Could Get Without A Two Week Wait.
Topshop had a few pairs that came very close – their MOTO style in black was pretty ideal to be honest, but at £49 and a student discount only if the cashier is very nice or a tad bit lazy, it was slightly out of my reach.

H&M was the next target, and I found the pair. I tried them on in a few sizes, and settled on a size 12 because it sat how I wanted it to. Oversized, long enough in the leg that if I wore it turned up or full length I wasn’t ruining the cuffs or practically wearing culottes. The price was also a whole £10 cheaper than Topshop too, winner.
I checked on Newlook, Forever21 and Asos just in case I could find any more I liked with discounts or that were at a lower price-point. Asos has a great range, but the issue with only being 5’2 and a half, is leg lengths are awkward and trying on to take back isn’t fab.
The result was: I got these, H&M, 10% discount because of a jeans promotion, and a couple of other things to bump the cart to free shipping (I was gonna send them back but I … loved them all. Oops.)
So, here are my tips for finding the perfect pair of dungarees:
– know exactly, or as close as you can visualise, what you’re after. style, fit, colour…
– don’t be afraid to shop around a bit to find exactly what you like; don’t buy it if you only think you ‘sort of’ like it.
– don’t be afraid to deviate from your own ‘size’ to find the fit you want. Mine are 2/3 sizes above my size in h&m (I usually wear a 6/8)
– utilise all discounts available to you! you don’t have to buy immediately unless you’re sure you won’t be able to find it on the website.
I’m super stoked to have these in my wardrobe. They look really cute with trainers for that super off-duty vibe, and I think they’d also go fabulously with brogues or loafers and a shirt. We shall see.

Dungarees (we call them overalls in the US) are awesome! I've been wanting a good pair, but also run into a similar problem of how expensive good ones can be. I dig this look with the side pony. Kind of reminds me of the 90s. Alyse (J.X.L.) ▲ Lumière & Lens

You suit them SO WELL. And I think I actually bought the pair you are on about, from Topshop! Which is rare for me because I usually am so stingy with money and buying things in the sale or just for a reasonable price…Meg | Elmpetra

They look fab. I have such problems finding things like dungarees and jumpsuits as I am fairly short. I do love my dungaree dress though.
