Fight or Flight

fight or flight - why catcalling is a serious issue
It pains me that it’s 2016 and we’ve still got people arguing that catcalling isn’t threatening or dangerous, that it’s just a bit of banter. That we’re all becoming too sensitive and should just take it on the chin.

I’ve had various things yelled at me from moving vehicles as I walk down the street. I’ve had cars pull up for maximum holler effect, and random comments made in passing. But I’ve never, ever had anyone step out of the vehicle until this past week.

[tw/cw for mentions of assault]

These sort of topics are sensitive, and I’ve been weighing up whether or not I should even post this, since all situations are different and I’m not writing this in a way that’s HERE’S A LOAD OF ADVICE THAT MAY OR MAY NOT WORK.

Considering if we look at my own experiences in the cities that I’ve lived in, this has been the first time anything has happened where the police have needed to be called – and I was with two other people. I’ve diced with the ‘walking home alone’ thing for almost the full time I was at uni and I’m endlessly lucky that nothing happened to me.

But this: there were three of us, walking back from a uni event, myself, another girl and a lad. We were in an area that was lit – not well but not badly – with CCTV and still, for all intents and purposes, on campus.

A car pulled up, someone inside made the comment, I brushed it off, the lad stuck up for us, and the next thing we know someone from inside the car is now outside the car, going towards my male friend and then my friend is narrowly avoiding a nasty head injury as a result of hitting a wall.

Car guy is in the middle of the road, hood up, arm raised.

In that sort of situation fight or flight kicks in.

And the first two things to do are:

1) Yell ‘call the police’. Loudly. Doesn’t matter if three people go to call them at once, make sure someone hears.

2) Get the registration/licence plate of the car. As fast as you can. Relay that to the police. Even if it’s the first thing you ask them to write down.

At that point for us, two of the other men in the car had come out to calm the first one down. I was walking over to see if my friend was ok – we had two people on the phone to the police and a witness suggesting we report it to the uni since we were still technically on campus.

I said thanks, but police would do a better job, hopefully – and then went to go and see if our lad was ok. In the interim, the two guys who had come to calm their third down had moved back towards their car, the one who’d initially got out had pulled his hood back down, and then spun round again as if he’d seen or heard something he didn’t like, put his hood back up and arm raised and started coming towards us again.

Thankfully he stopped in the road before getting too close to us, turned and ran off to get back into the car that was now driving away.

fight or flight - why catcalling is a serious issue
I don’t train as much as I used to, but I keep active and strong with light weights and a workout routine that uses elements of martial arts

But it wasn’t until everything had calmed down later, police spoken to and we were back at my friends’ flat that I realised that my thought process and my female friends thought process in that second instance were really different. She was there thinking ‘what can I do’, and I was stood thinking ‘if he comes closer my foot will be connecting with his head’.

And that’s not because I’m inherently ‘more violent’ or reflexive or optimistic of my own abilities, but because I hold a black belt in martial arts; I have muscle memory and years of being taught how to read opponents that are taller, stronger and less predictable. I also have it on pretty solid grading  and competition authority that I have a mean kick.

The difference here is, is that I know walking back late at night, while it’s still scary for me (there’s always that initial moment of ‘oh fuck’ that gives your attacker a gap of time to overpower, as well as the uncertainty of weapons), I know that if it comes down to it, my muscle memory will kick in and I’ll give as good as I can to get out of the situation. Because when you strike with intent it shocks people.

But I also know that for me to have that (no matter if it was born out of me being helpless in a situation and my dad agreeing that it was a fab idea, to be honest) – the same way that Gigi Hadid had her muscle memory and reflexes from boxercise to fend off her attacker – is an inherently privileged position to be in.

And it pains me to be in 2016 and recommending to my friends to get themselves into self defence classes, or krav maga, or muay thai, or anything that will give them some sort of confidence to take charge in situations like the one I was in on Saturday night. And the fact that I’ve even had them is a privilege, as the cost and time and dedication is something that not everyone can afford or even have access to.

It also pains me to be in 2016 and for people to not realise that allowing or passing catcalling as banter or ‘a bit of fun’, instead of saying that no it’s not OK under any circumstances, is effectively condoning the violent undertones. Because if you’re not checking people on their behaviour, the minute that someone does, the minute someone challenges, you can end up in situations like I was on Saturday, or worse.

You may disagree with me, but if you don’t call out that sort of behaviour, you’re part of the problem.

That was such a scary position that you and your friends were in! It frightens me to think that if I ever was in that position I wouldn't know what to do as I have never took any sort of self-defence classes and I have absolutely no strengthLauren | Lauren the Daydreamer

That is terrifying that someone came after you guys. In situations like these, I always tend to ignore catcallers because they seem to be aiming to provoke a response. It's sort of a lose lose situation: if you ignore them, you're only passively fighting it, but it can escalate if you engage with these creeps. Alyse (J.X.L.) ▲ Lumière & Lens

It's lose-lose until there are actual consequences for the people who make the comments. whether it's peer-to-peer discipline or from an authoritative source. It's so sad that we have to deal with this stuff to avoid worse situations happening. xo

This is a really good and important post that I've never actually read before and I think it's so brave and beneficial that you've been able to share your experience and to be able to let people know the importance of these issues! I used to take part in Taekwondo when I was younger but god forbid I'm ever in that situation, I'd like to think I've got a bit of it left in me, but who knows! It's such a valuable life lesson (although it shouldn't be nowadays really – it's getting even worse!) because you never really think about it until it's too late!JosieVictoriaa // Travel, Fashion & Lifestyle

My friends and I took a series of self defence classes before we headed for traveling overseas. I havent had any of such altercations, and im so sorry for anyone who has go to gothrough what you went through. <3Your story is so worth sharing, and its sad, but i think girls really should learn to protect themselves, no matter how safe statistics say where you live in are.♡ Carina – Blog // YouTube

Firstly, I think it's so brave of you to have opened up about this, just to try to help other people! Secondly, I'm so sorry you had that happen to you! I'm just so glad you had other people with you, and that even if they hadn't been there you would have had a way to defend yourself. But the point is you shouldn't have to! It's so wrong that in 2016 girls should still be afraid to walk by themselves, or just be disrespected by someone calling derogatory things to them from a car.Kelly // Velvet and Vibranium

come with me to get laser treatment done at 클럽 come with me to get laser treatment done at 클럽미즈라미체의원 (lamiche clinic) in seongpa-gu, seoul ☺️

it was my first time getting this kind of treatment done, so i was nervous, but the staff walked me through everything and the process was simple. They have a full interpretation service if you don’t speak korean, too.

I had a skin evaluation, and then consultation with Dr. Joo. It was really eye opening (and fully humbling) to see my skin like that, and I was open to letting Dr. Joo make recommendations based on his expertise. I do thoroughly research skincare on my own, but there are some things that creams and actives just cannot do.

Unfortunately due to work commitments I couldn’t do the full 3-4 hours of treatment that were recommended, but I’m pleased with the results of my treatment anyway!

treatment:
- rough extraction (not filmed)
removes sebum and other impurities from pores. This was probably the most painful part for me? but i still felt I was in very good and capable hands. 🥲

lasers:
- affirm mpx
🎯 appearance of pores, wrinkles, ptosis, deep nasolabial folds, cervical stripes
- fraxel dual
🎯 appearance of scarring, wrinkles, ptosis, deep nasolabial folds, cervical stripes
- new accolade
🎯 pigmented lesions
- excel v
🎯 pigmented lesions, vascular lesions, elastic lesion
-revlite c7
🎯 skin surface, wrinkles, scarring, pigmented lesion, pimple pigmentation

other: HA filler, front cheek (volume)

thoughts:
the pain was less than i’d thought it would be… though I do have quite a high pain tolerance. I experienced some of the expected scabbing during the next two days as the skin healed, and took the recommended medication to help with the healing process.

after 2 weeks:
my skin does have less redness, especially around my nose, and the surface texture looks better! I’ve had a lot of compliments on how my skin is looking recently (despite the cold) so overall I am very pleased. :)

If you have any questions, let me know and i’ll answer as best i can :)

good morning from the chilly riverside~ even tho good morning from the chilly riverside~

even though the weather these days is getting less than toasty (haha), I have been making use of the Seoul bike rental program!
Ttareungi (따릉기) is super easy to use, you do need an app and internet connection, but the user interface is really intuitive, and you can use it in korean or english. The map tells you how many bikes are at any given location, and renting one is a simple as scanning the qr code on the back, paying 2000 won for 2 hours (1000won for 1 hour, 5000won whole day) and peddling off 💖

(as someone who is terrified of doing something wrong, I was really happy with how easy both rental and return is.) You don’t need an account to use them either.

(toast isn’t the biggest fan, but he doesn’t like bikes so i’ll give him a pass)

a night(tour) at the museum! The Gyeongbok palac a night(tour) at the museum!

The Gyeongbok palace night tour is a popular attraction over the summer months, but did you know the National Museum offers guided tours too?

I went on a guided tour of the museum garden recently, and saw a lot of really interesting structures and treasures of note. Plus it’s nice to spend time outside with the autumn leaves (peak time will probably be around next week!)

entry to the museum is free, and there are a few different tours you can do both inside and outside of it :)

found a whale in the han river 🐳 🐋 (don’ found a whale in the han river 🐳 🐋

(don’t worry it’s not real! - but it is part of the kcontent festival happening at the 세빛섬 / floating islands at banpo han river park.

The whale is from Extraordinary Attorney Woo, and you can also see Younghee from Squid Game, and one of the cells from Yumi’s Cells (admittedly I haven’t seen that one…)

There are other games you can play too, and if you go on a weekend you can craft your own whale)

:) The festival runs until september 30th! ))

Sad to say I definitely haven’t utilised the seasons as much as I wanted to because of work :( I did manage to escape the heat by eating the staple summer dessert (bingsu // 빙수 ) 💖 and chilling in my downtime in cafes!

This location is @provokeseoul , a repurposed flour mill that was built during the japanese colonial period of korea. These days it doesn’t grind grain, but you might have seen it in music videos and #kdrama scenes!

Currently this location isn’t open to the public to visit, so thanks @globalseoulmates for organising the tour! But!!! The Provoke team have plans to open to the public in the future to link to Mullae art village~

if you’re struggling to reapply your sunscreen t if you’re struggling to reapply your sunscreen throughout the day, then I really suggest you switch so a sun stick. They’re incredibly portable, and, most importantly, no mess!!! The amount of times I’ve had sunscreen explode in my bag…

This sun stick from @marynmay_official is great for on the go application. It contains peptides and bakuchiol, which are great for helping your skin fight off free radicals that can damage your skin. It’s not greasy, and wears well under makeup.

It’s been such a great addition to my bag that I actually almost forgot to take it out to make this reel 🥲😅

Thanks to the Seoul Hallyu Activites Program I got to go to CJ The Kitchen and experience making Kimbap for the first time ❤️

It wasn’t all smooth sailing but our teacher said my kimbap rolling skills were good 🥹 which … well you can judge for yourself 😂

It was a lot of fun, and there are a lot of different activities to try out on the Hallyu program that unfortunately I didn’t get to do because of my work schedule. You can take dance classes with YGX, craft making classes, go to SBS The Show, or make Korean liquor or kimchi.

🌺 flower festival season is upon us 🌸 Cher 🌺 flower festival season is upon us 🌸

Cherry blossoms are probably the most famous flower festival that happens across the country (there are some amazing spots in seoul for seeing them) - but there are a lot of other festivals for different flowers too!
(I have them saved on my naver maps under orange hearts so that I can see them easily)

At the moment, canola flowers (유채꽃) are in full bloom (they’re a spring flower in Korea) and there are a couple of great places to see them in all their glory in Seoul.

One of them is Seorae Island (서래섬), between shinbanpo station (신반포역) and gubanpo station (구반포역). It’s a small island covered in Canola flowers, with a pretty Han river view.

Seorae village (서래마을), the french quarter, isn’t far away either, so you can treat yourself to some french pastries after visiting, or get yourself a full picnic spread.

(Even though the festival is technically over now, you’ll still be able to see the flowers for a bit longer ^^)

Other flower festivals happening soon are:

🥀 rose festival in jungnang-gu (중랑구)
🥀 seoul grand park rose garden festival

📌 서래섬 - about a 15 minute walk from 구반포역 exit 2, or 신반포역 exit 1
(40 Sinbanpo-to 11-gil, Seocho-gu, Seoul)
🌼 The festival runs from may 12-21st and entry is free!
