It’s basically a trope of my degree that most of our graduates end up as an English Second Language (ESL) teacher for a period of time. During my uni days, we often joked that we wouldn’t ‘end up like that’, we’d use our degrees for something ‘more meaningful’. It was a fall-back option, definitely not an end goal.
Whether by passion, accident, or desperation, it’s something that is often seen as a ‘filler’ occupation, a stop-gap between graduation and a ‘real’ career. It’s marketed as an ‘easy way to pay back your student loans’, and has acquired somewhat of a bad reputation.
Despite all this, it’s what I’m currently doing (if you weren’t aware), have been for the last 2 years, and I honestly couldn’t be happier.
