I never truly feel remotely Christmassy until I’m at home – with the tree up and all our fabulously shiny, slightly tacky decorations strewn ‘artfully’ across the house. It’s just something for me that is so homey and welcoming and thoroughly right, that anywhere else just feels a … well a lot wrong this close to Christmas. 

I’m back at my parents now for winter break, and honestly, I don’t think I realised how much I needed to be at home. I’m not lonely in Sheffield, far from it, and mum and dad have come up to visit me during term time, but you know when you get to that internal level of utter doneness that you’re feeling pretty apathetic and need a change of pace, or a holiday to recharge? Yeah, I hit that. But uni doesn’t exactly make it easy to take spontaneous trips mid-week, so I’ve just strung myself out probs a bit too much. Being home has instantly made me feel a bit more settled. It’s nice. 

Last year when I returned home for Christmas, I was too late to help hang the decorations and put up the tree, and the year before that I was in Korea, so I’ve missed the little family tradition of sorting out what (or who) goes where. I missed that.

Oooh also: what colour theme did you go with for the decor this year? Quite obviously for us it’s red and gold – which it has been for the last two years. Do you have the same theme each year or do you change it up?
