Sushi Express is, by far, my favourite place to get Japanese food in Sheffield. I don’t even really care that it’s Chinese run, the taste is probably the most authentic I’ve had outside of Asia. Turn your nose up all you like, I have never had a bad experience, and every time I go to eat here I leave feeling happy and dangerously close to a food coma.

It’s also the first place I suggest when someone says that they don’t know if they’d like Japanese food, or the last time they had sushi it was bad. Chances are, the only previous experience has been Yo! Sushi, and Yo is probably the worst place to go for sushi ever. 

Sushi Express is worlds apart in comparison.

What we ordered (there were four of us):

gyoza,

salmon & salmon roe mini don

dragon maki (6 pcs)
roasted salmon maki (6pc)
roasted green tea x4 (two teapots, yay!)

I feel that Japanese is one of those cuisines that once you’ve had good, and I’m talking actual authentic tasting good, food, you’re instantly hooked. No I don’t class Wagamama’s as good – overpriced and underflavoured, yes, but not good. 

Flavour wise, I’ve always found it a little mellower than Korean bright-red-ALL-THE-RED ‘you can tell how spicy this is because it’s bright flipping red‘ palette, but the flavours are so rich and beautiful generally. When they do spice they do spice (eyyyy wasabi), but I’d say generally, Japanese food is a nice middle ground. 

Sushi express delivers exactly what I want from a UK based Japanese restaurant. All the food, all the flavour,  reasonable prices and large portion sizes. With a number of other Japanese restaurants around Sheffield, Sushi Express will probably always come out on top for me because it tastes so darn good. 

The restaurant endeavours to only use the best fresh ingredients (yay), and strives to keep their dishes healthy and delicious. So when you order you’re sure that everything is being made fresh then and there, which I know can be an issue with surrounding revolving sushi bars. You don’t exactly know how long that fish has been revolving. And fresh means that the sushi isn’t dry. There is really nothing worse than stale sushi. 

Sushi Express also (obviously) isn’t just a sushi restaurant, they have many other Japanese dishes on their menu. From sashimi to bento boxes to salads, tempura and takoyaki… They also have a few vegetarian dishes available if all this talk of fish and meat is making your head spin. 

Basically, if you’re looking for good Japanese food in Sheffield I will always, always recommend Sushi Express. The value for money is brilliant. (They’ve also been added to JustEat. Oh dear.)
