Let’s raise a glass for all the gal-pals and bromances that are so completely platonic when everyone and their bloomin’ dog is trying to sell us romance out of their backsides. When you’ve committed your immediate future to your degree, there isn’t a lot of time for dating, but there’s always time to check the group chat/ have a coffee/skype. Always.
In the past, my judge of character hasn’t been the best. I’ve put my trust in people I really shouldn’t have, and consequently experienced and endured really toxic friendships – something I’m glad is being spoken about more. I think I’ve finally navigated the choppy waters and have landed in a few friendship groups that are fab – and it makes me so happy.
So here are 10 signs that you’ve found a top-class group of pals.
1 – the limit does not exist.
the bar is as low as it can go. no limits. nothing is too weird, no question is stupid. everyone is ok with the occasional tmi body issue and feelings are welcome.
2 – conversation flows as freely as vodka in a student bar
300 messages you missed because you were actually working/sleeping/doing something else away from your phone? no worries, you’ll be caught up in no time and fit seamlessly back in.
3 – they’ll tell you when you’re being a bit of an arse.
because as much as everything is bantz and a bit of a laugh, sometimes we all need a lil’ reminder that we’re not God’s gift. friends don’t let friends be dicks.
4 – or when you’re just being dumb af
you might be the butt of a joke for a week (or forever) but it’s with love. and now they’ve stopped you from thoroughly embarrassing yourself in front of absolute strangers, so really it’s win-win
5 – or when you’re pranging out before a date and need reassurance that you are, in fact, fabulous.
6 – they’ll be there to pick you up, dust you off and send you on your merry little way with love and encouragement even when you feel lower than low.
7 – they’ll always be happy for your success
regardless of whether that success is a promotion, putting in a full workout at the gym, managing to nab a ridiculous bargain in the sales, or eating all the pizza. if you’re happy about achieving something, they’ll be happy about you achieving something.
8 – they’re up for adventures
within reason, but a great group of mates won’t leave you to wander the streets by yourself… unless you want to.
9 – when it’s time to be serious, they’re serious
life isn’t always a constant stream of fantastic, and sometimes the crazy train drops us off for an extended stay in shitsville. it’s not memes and inside jokes – the serious switch can and will be flipped when the need arises.
10 – even if you don’t talk every day, you can pick up right where you left off
and it’s not weird or odd or jarred or uncomfortable.
If anyone has any more signs then let me know! And since life is short and love should be shared, take a minute out of your day to remind your friends that they’re appreciated. This time of year is always so couple-y, and platonic relationships are just as important as romantic.
Friends are the family we choose.
