Lessons from ‘Coronacation’ (or self-imposed COVID isolation)

fiixii dealing with covid isolation in south korea

Sorry for assigning an almost cute little buzzword to the current situation, but South Korea is not, and hasn’t been on lockdown since the COVID-19 virus arrived on the peninsula in January. We have had very strong suggestions to socially distance / self-isolate, and mandatory quarantine implemented for those who have come into contact with known positive results, or showing symptoms (which has since extended into all new arrivals to the country) but nothing hugely drastic. I’ve had 3 weeks of ‘Coronacation’ (Corona vacation – though I have absolutely not been treating it as a vacation, more a time to avoid all interaction with anyone other than the dogs and the boy), with a return to work for two weeks and 4 days in the middle of that – but it’s taught me a few things, and reaffirmed some others. Here are some lessons from COVID isolation.

Things I have learned from this period

First up – I did not consent to living through a future ‘Historical Event’. It’s not fun and I would like to exit please. It’s also important to consider and understand that this is a very stressful time for literally everyone, and for all the people preaching ‘if you’re not getting stuff done, it’s not that you didn’t have the time, it’s that you don’t have the drive’ can take a long walk off a short pier, please k thanks. That train of thought is not helpful and needs derailing stat.

This time right now is one where taking care of your mental health is really important, as well as facing each day as it comes. Whether that’s adjusting to a new normal, or trying to find some semblance of normalcy in a very unpredictable situation.

So what I have I learned during this period of COVID ‘isolation’, no one asked, but I’m here to answer that questions anyway,

I’m sure routine is at the top of most people’s list. Having a routine, I’ve figured, is important for me. Whilst I’m not a fan of my current hours out of the house (7:45am – 6:00pm) having a set time to wake up / have to be ready by, is something that dictates whether I’m going to have a ‘productive’ day or not. (If I’m feeling up to it.) It also helps to give myself a bedtime so I’m not effing up my sleep schedule too much. Luckily I’m one of those people that can sleep easily and sleep anywhere, but going to bed at 3am on the reg is Not Healthy. Scheduling time in to work out is also important for me, too. Not just so that I actually do it, but so that I don’t get trapped in a mindset where I pretty much physically wreak havoc on my body due to problems in the past with over-exercising. It’s a niche problem, but having scheduled 10 minute yoga breaks or Madfit dance workouts (seriously she’s a great channel) is way better for my mental health than a 3 hour exercise marathon.

Migrating my ‘to-do list’ from daily to weekly has helped ease the pressure off myself to be this productive machine in a time of high stress. COVID isolation isn’t the time to hurt yourself mentally. I used to have daily to-do lists, and even though they weren’t long due to my working hours, I found that I was adding more and more to ‘fill the extra time’, and then feeling increasingly defeated when I couldn’t complete them. Now I fill out a few tasks that have to be completed by the end of the week, it takes away the stress of assigning a set deadline day, and the guilt of not doing everything in one day.

Distraction methods / hobbies are a good idea. Sometimes you can have too much netflix, but picking up a new hobby to distract yourself from everything going on outside is a good diversion for the mind. Everyone has different coping strategies, whether you want to bake 17 loaves of banana bread, start a sourdough culture, or repeatedly stab fabric a couple of hundred times (cross stitch/embroidery) it’s OK. No matter what noisy people on social media say. Personally, I’ve started sewing projects, been baking and learning new recipes, as well as journaling more. It’s not ‘super productive’ but it’s a lesson in effective COVID isolation distraction techniques.

Things I have reaffirmed due to COVID Isolation

I can’t work full time. I’m not cut out for the 9-5:30 grind. I love my job, but it’s doing a number on my health and apart from the necessity of it for my visa, I can’t find enough other reasons to justify it. I was back at work after the first two weeks of Coronacation and I got sick on day 3 due to increased stress, commuting, and just general wtf-ery. It’s not great, really. But I’m now more motivated than ever to get my visa switch completed by the end of this year, earlier if I can.

People are selfish. I’ve always been more on the Realist side of theories in International Relations – I agree with a lot of Constructivist Theory, but Liberalism seems too generous. This period of uncertainty and necessity to flatten the curve has essentially proved most of society is incredibly inward thinking. It sucks to see it play out in real time with people hoarding toilet paper and necessary groceries at the extreme end, and generally not adhering to social distancing at the other. In Korea, society is generally geared towards the greater social body than the self (Confucianism!)… to an extent. There have been increasing numbers of people not gathering in larger groups outdoors, going to clubs and bars, the weather is hitting that beautiful springtime bloom that Korea has… and to be honest, to me, it’s so selfish. We’ve been lucky here, that the curve has flattened somewhat, but we’re not out of the woods yet and we’re predicted spikes. Seeing what’s happening globally has also really soured my view on society. Thankfully there are little pick-me-ups that surface on the internet, but on the whole it’s been pretty depressing reading.

Having extra time in the day is really nice. I genuinely hope that this period of uncertainty has shown society at large that working 8-9 hours in a building that sucks the life out of us is unnecessary. Not having to stress about running out of hours in the day is nice. Not having to sit doing nothing at work sometimes is nice. Having time to actually work on myself or do things I want to other than on the weekends, is nice.

Genuinely, I hope that this pandemic helps to restructure the way we do things as a global society. It’s been clear for a while that things needed to change. I really hope that this passes quickly in a sense I would like to go outside and not have to worry about staying 2m apart from everyone, or being very isolated, that is a normal I would welcome back with open arms. But I really hope that we find a new ‘normal’ that isn’t so draining on us mentally.

I hope you’re all keeping safe and well during this time. If you need a distraction, I have plenty of content here to browse through to take your mind off the current situation. You can check out fashion / style, beauty (including Korean beauty and skincare), or a little about my life in South Korea.

Yup, agreed. I saw a fellow wedding photographer (we’re both out of work here in the US for the foreseeable future) posting this exact quote on Instagram, and it’s like sorry I don’t have the mental capacity to learn a new language when I’m literally trying to survive? My boss has also been posting productivity nonsense every day about how everyone needs to get off Netflix and “get after it” (whatever ‘it’ means), and I’m just like really? Shaming people for their coping mechanisms?

I KNOW RIGHT. If people are being insanely productive in this period good for them for either blocking it all out, or being wired so that it doesn’t affect them. But that isn’t everyone and it’s really damaging to push those who are barely coping into feeling even worse. I have THOUGHTS on productivity / hustle culture as it is anyway (so, so damaging. Sleep is important!!!!! burn out is not cute!!!!), so this is kind of just showing the worst of some people in both lack of empathy AND selfishness.

Hope that you’re doing OK in regards to everything xo

come with me to get laser treatment done at 클럽 come with me to get laser treatment done at 클럽미즈라미체의원 (lamiche clinic) in seongpa-gu, seoul ☺️

it was my first time getting this kind of treatment done, so i was nervous, but the staff walked me through everything and the process was simple. They have a full interpretation service if you don’t speak korean, too.

I had a skin evaluation, and then consultation with Dr. Joo. It was really eye opening (and fully humbling) to see my skin like that, and I was open to letting Dr. Joo make recommendations based on his expertise. I do thoroughly research skincare on my own, but there are some things that creams and actives just cannot do.

Unfortunately due to work commitments I couldn’t do the full 3-4 hours of treatment that were recommended, but I’m pleased with the results of my treatment anyway!

treatment:
- rough extraction (not filmed)
removes sebum and other impurities from pores. This was probably the most painful part for me? but i still felt I was in very good and capable hands. 🥲

lasers:
- affirm mpx
🎯 appearance of pores, wrinkles, ptosis, deep nasolabial folds, cervical stripes
- fraxel dual
🎯 appearance of scarring, wrinkles, ptosis, deep nasolabial folds, cervical stripes
- new accolade
🎯 pigmented lesions
- excel v
🎯 pigmented lesions, vascular lesions, elastic lesion
-revlite c7
🎯 skin surface, wrinkles, scarring, pigmented lesion, pimple pigmentation

other: HA filler, front cheek (volume)

thoughts:
the pain was less than i’d thought it would be… though I do have quite a high pain tolerance. I experienced some of the expected scabbing during the next two days as the skin healed, and took the recommended medication to help with the healing process.

after 2 weeks:
my skin does have less redness, especially around my nose, and the surface texture looks better! I’ve had a lot of compliments on how my skin is looking recently (despite the cold) so overall I am very pleased. :)

If you have any questions, let me know and i’ll answer as best i can :)

good morning from the chilly riverside~ even tho good morning from the chilly riverside~

even though the weather these days is getting less than toasty (haha), I have been making use of the Seoul bike rental program!
Ttareungi (따릉기) is super easy to use, you do need an app and internet connection, but the user interface is really intuitive, and you can use it in korean or english. The map tells you how many bikes are at any given location, and renting one is a simple as scanning the qr code on the back, paying 2000 won for 2 hours (1000won for 1 hour, 5000won whole day) and peddling off 💖

(as someone who is terrified of doing something wrong, I was really happy with how easy both rental and return is.) You don’t need an account to use them either.

(toast isn’t the biggest fan, but he doesn’t like bikes so i’ll give him a pass)

a night(tour) at the museum! The Gyeongbok palac a night(tour) at the museum!

The Gyeongbok palace night tour is a popular attraction over the summer months, but did you know the National Museum offers guided tours too?

I went on a guided tour of the museum garden recently, and saw a lot of really interesting structures and treasures of note. Plus it’s nice to spend time outside with the autumn leaves (peak time will probably be around next week!)

entry to the museum is free, and there are a few different tours you can do both inside and outside of it :)

found a whale in the han river 🐳 🐋 (don’ found a whale in the han river 🐳 🐋

(don’t worry it’s not real! - but it is part of the kcontent festival happening at the 세빛섬 / floating islands at banpo han river park.

The whale is from Extraordinary Attorney Woo, and you can also see Younghee from Squid Game, and one of the cells from Yumi’s Cells (admittedly I haven’t seen that one…)

There are other games you can play too, and if you go on a weekend you can craft your own whale)

:) The festival runs until september 30th! ))

Sad to say I definitely haven’t utilised the seasons as much as I wanted to because of work :( I did manage to escape the heat by eating the staple summer dessert (bingsu // 빙수 ) 💖 and chilling in my downtime in cafes!

I think i’m going to wait a bit a bit for the heat to go down before breaking out the picnic stuff this year 💖

Currently this location isn’t open to the public to visit, so thanks @globalseoulmates for organising the tour! But!!! The Provoke team have plans to open to the public in the future to link to Mullae art village~

if you’re struggling to reapply your sunscreen t if you’re struggling to reapply your sunscreen throughout the day, then I really suggest you switch so a sun stick. They’re incredibly portable, and, most importantly, no mess!!! The amount of times I’ve had sunscreen explode in my bag…

This sun stick from @marynmay_official is great for on the go application. It contains peptides and bakuchiol, which are great for helping your skin fight off free radicals that can damage your skin. It’s not greasy, and wears well under makeup.

It’s been such a great addition to my bag that I actually almost forgot to take it out to make this reel 🥲😅

Thanks to the Seoul Hallyu Activites Program I got to go to CJ The Kitchen and experience making Kimbap for the first time ❤️

It wasn’t all smooth sailing but our teacher said my kimbap rolling skills were good 🥹 which … well you can judge for yourself 😂

It was a lot of fun, and there are a lot of different activities to try out on the Hallyu program that unfortunately I didn’t get to do because of my work schedule. You can take dance classes with YGX, craft making classes, go to SBS The Show, or make Korean liquor or kimchi.

🌺 flower festival season is upon us 🌸 Cher 🌺 flower festival season is upon us 🌸

Cherry blossoms are probably the most famous flower festival that happens across the country (there are some amazing spots in seoul for seeing them) - but there are a lot of other festivals for different flowers too!
(I have them saved on my naver maps under orange hearts so that I can see them easily)

At the moment, canola flowers (유채꽃) are in full bloom (they’re a spring flower in Korea) and there are a couple of great places to see them in all their glory in Seoul.

One of them is Seorae Island (서래섬), between shinbanpo station (신반포역) and gubanpo station (구반포역). It’s a small island covered in Canola flowers, with a pretty Han river view.

Seorae village (서래마을), the french quarter, isn’t far away either, so you can treat yourself to some french pastries after visiting, or get yourself a full picnic spread.

(Even though the festival is technically over now, you’ll still be able to see the flowers for a bit longer ^^)

Other flower festivals happening soon are:

🥀 rose festival in jungnang-gu (중랑구)
🥀 seoul grand park rose garden festival

📌 서래섬 - about a 15 minute walk from 구반포역 exit 2, or 신반포역 exit 1
(40 Sinbanpo-to 11-gil, Seocho-gu, Seoul)
🌼 The festival runs from may 12-21st and entry is free!
