ALL THE BUTTON DOWN ITEMS. And by all I mean two. But they’re pretty important items in this outfit to be fair. I refuse to let go of the a-line skirt trend. And the denim jacket has made a return since the weather is getting colder. Finally.
And as a summer baby that’s something I never thought I’d say.
We didn’t really get much of a summer did we? Even when I went to Austria, it was beautiful and warm sometimes, but also fresh snow and the rain did wonders to take the midday heat off. That was early July; since then in the UK we’ve had the odd nice spell but summer? Not in your traditional sense. It’s been a slightly weird and uninspiring time for me with my wardrobe. I love my warm weather clothes but I’m aching for layers and scarves and cute winter outfits. Soz summer, I love you but missed you this year. Irreconcilable differences at the minute.

Since I spent the day in Birmingham with Han and Lizzie, I’ve been craving the right pair of black, slightly slouchy dungarees to add to my wardrobe. I thought I’d found some online, but they arrived and were totally not what I expected, so I planned a trip to Leicester to go and have a root around, and Han wanted to come with. Fab news for me because it’s always a blast to do outfit shoots with Han, and Leicester has some really pretty areas that make fab backdrops for photos. Knowing that I was going to be spending a lot of time walking around in search for the perfect dungarees, being greeted by all the grey skies and ridiculously heavy rain, comfort and ease was key.
Button down / button through skirts are brilliant if you’re going shopping and know you’re going to be trying things on; you can whip em off without having to do the dreaded shimmy-in-and-out. I paired my burgundy denim Urban Outfitters skirt with a black top – usually I go for white shirts with this – but I wasn’t particularly keen on anything that was more fuss than it was worth. Simple, easy, staple. A black slit neck three-quarter length sleeved cotton top. I really like this top. It’s quite old now, but old and faithful.
The denim jacket and boots were easy choices to add – these boots from New Look hardly leave my feet if I’m wanting to do ‘easy, but not rolled out of bed easy’, they add just the right amount of height, and the platform makes them comfortable to walk in. Denim jackets are the effortless throw-on, and still rocking right the way through into ss17.
I also, finally, remembered that I can do things with my hair. I honestly have no real clue how to ‘do’ hair past standard up-do’s, plaits, straightening it, and leaving it down, so I tend to just… leave it. But I got that really pretty crescent moon clip in my summer sales accessories haul, so decided to use it! It’s really cute and quite comfortable to wear. I get the worst pin and headband headaches, so being able to wear it for a full day without pain is definitely something!

I love the moon clip! It's a casual, low maintenance way to style hair. I hear you on headband aches. Also can't wait for the weather to get colder. Summer this year was a real scorcher.Alyse (J.X.L.) | Lumière & Lens
