Honest thoughts on the Samsung Galaxy s6

samsung galaxy s6 gold honest review awake screen

I’ve been a part of the Samsung Galaxy S6 clan since Christmas, and since that’s just a little bit over a month ago now, I thought it was more than enough time for collecting my thoughts on the device to share with you, so here we are.

Bear in mind, my previous handset was the Galaxy S3mini, so I’m no stranger to Samsung phones and the need for multiple battery packs, or patience with the android system. I did get the S3mini in 2013 though, and was soldiering on despite a cracked / peeling screen, the inability to move past JellyBean, and calls randomly cutting out at the 2 minute mark. We had a good run.

So with my little galaxy history out of the way, how does the Galaxy S6 compare?

samsung galaxy s6 gold honest review

First up, the gold makes a nice change from the pebble blue of the last body. Not that pebble blue was bad, just… gold is prettier? It spends 90% of its life in its case so it isn’t a major factor, really. I just like the shiny gold back.

MY THUMB IS ON THE PRINT SENSOR WHY IS IT NOT A MATCH. – this technology is pretty neat, though. It’s an added level of security which I do, really like. I just don’t appreciate it telling me I didn’t place my thumb on at the exact angle I did when it read the print??!?!

I got this for the camera, let’s face it. I’m very happy on that front, my instagram now looks fab. – with a 16 megapixel main camera, taking decent, clear snaps even in low lighting is no longer a challenge that requires more acrobatics than I am capable of.

Fast charging confuses me. The time difference between using the lightning charger vs a regular charger is basically a day. what? – ok so not a whole day, but the difference between plugging your phone in with a fast charger vs a normal lead is quite something. Fast charging is really nice though – I don’t have to have to make sure I have sufficient time to wait for full charge before going out!

I’ll  be endlessly amused by the fact that the home screen MOVES WHEN YOU MOVE THE PHONE. THAT’S SO CUTE. MOLANG’S FACE MOVES. – my phone’s wallpaper is the Korean bunny cartoon Molang, to clear up confusion there. I think it’s very snazzy that if you tick the ‘wallpaper motion effect’ to on, then when you rotate the phone in your hand the screen moves. It’s a really nice feature.

You can download themes for your handset. not having to install weird apps to do that is brilliant. I can change themes when I want (seasonally) and don’t have to download apps I can’t remove!  –  a pitfall of the S3mini was it’s lack of customisability, at least for me. I’m usually not a fan of the default theme, especially as I tend to favour pastel home screens and change wallpapers seasonally. Having a built in system for themes rather than installing apps that require multiple other downloads is much better, seeing as it was almost impossibly to remove one of the widgets I had on my S3mini. Max frustration.

Getting used to the size of it from a samsung s3mini was actually not that bad. but then again the phone cases I had for my s3mini made it a similar size.  – I knew the s6 wouldn’t be a problem for me size wise, as I tend to have the super huge silicon phone cases (teddies etc) that made my s3mini pretty much the same size as the s6. I haven’t invested in a thoroughly massive case for this one yet, but I can’t see it being an issue when I do…

The large screen is ace.

Downloading fonts is pretty swish. actually the customisability of the handset is brilliant. – not having to stick with the same 4 font options is nice! I’ve already covered the ability to customise already, but you really can do a lot with the handset that I couldn’t before!

My mum finds easy mode (for those who are getting used to their first smartphone) really useful. it has everything she needs and has helped her adjust very well (she also has the s6) – great feature for those who haven’t had a smartphone but wanted to upgrade. Means she doesn’t have a lot of the jargon that I have on mine, but she doesn’t lose any of the quality of the phone.

It was wonderfully easy to import all of the data from my old phone to the new one. – I was really concerned I’d lose contacts, important messages or photos. I backed everything up, but was surprised at how easy it was to swap the content over from my old phone to the S6. I used the suggested app, smartswitch, and it was all pretty quick!

App optimisation = winner. – I like being able to control which apps are ‘always power saving’, or on compatibility mode. It means that I’m not draining excess power when I don’t need to be and the background apps that run aren’t taking up my processing speed… or something.

Having the ‘view all programs/windows’ button to the left of the ‘home’ button was a bit odd – but useful. – on the s3mini you have to hold the home button down to close apps fully, which was a little bit of a nuisance sometimes. I like that the s6 has it’s own allocated button, and you can scroll through the windows rather than slide closure.

Battery life – It lasts for a full day or more, depending on how much I’ve used it. As I said, I’m well versed in shit samsung batteries, so it’s not really something I minded coming into the S6. I do think that the inability to change battery is annoying – for me that’s what set samsung phones apart from apple products. But with portable chargers being so cheap these days it’s not as much of an issue.

Screen options – I like the smart screen ideas, and the ability to change the screen mode – and that there are so many accessibility options.

Security – other than fingerprints, you can choose to lock your phone with patterns and passcodes – which are all other fab things that I was able to do on the S3mini, but it’s nice to see tried and tested tech be carried over.

Sim card Switch – the smooth sides are brilliant and nice in the palm, but when it comes to switching sim cards, having to scour the whole house for that one tiny little key thing… ehhh. Surely a push mechanism would’ve been just a-ok too? I mean it’s great on a security front because no one can just switch out the sim if the phone gets stolen, which would help with recovery I guess, but frustration.

Right. Those are my thoughts a month and a bit in – I’m sure I’ll have some more further down the line. If you have the s6, what do you think of it? Let me know 🙂

I have the S6. I bought it in December last year too, funnily enough. I'd been an Apple girl before that, but I'm definitely a Samsung girl now. I love this phone so much; it's better battery life (though not the best, it definitely beats Apple) and it has tonnes of neat features. I also love the ability to change themes as well! I didn't know about the wallpaper motion effect. I'm going to have to try that now! 🙂 x http://www.aimeeraindropwrites.co.uk x

Great honest review, I switched from an Apple phone to Samsung I couple of months ago (I still have it on easy mode!) but I think I prefer the iPhone technology. Would love if you could check out my recent fashion post? :)The Fashion Road

I have an iPhone 5s and I'm obsessed with it. I have always used iOS, but I love how easy Android can be (Like, not having the download option for audio files or media bluetooth sharing in iPhone is really frustrating). Love your detailed review!!!! 16 megapixels sound fabulous *insert heart-eyed emoji here*Noor | Noor's Place

Aww both my mum and I got S6s just before Christmas too, though my mum got the S6 Edge and has no idea how to use it! The fast charging thing massively confused me when I first got it, haha! xxKimberley // thecolourchronicles.com

I've had the S6 since August last year and I've been sooo impressed with the battery. It holds out far longer than I was expecting. I still love this phone, but then my last one was one of the older Sony Xperia models and it isn't a touch on this one haha. Also, how have I never noticed that my background moves when I move my phone?! I mean, it is just a texture so not overly obvious, but still… damn.

come with me to get laser treatment done at 클럽 come with me to get laser treatment done at 클럽미즈라미체의원 (lamiche clinic) in seongpa-gu, seoul ☺️

it was my first time getting this kind of treatment done, so i was nervous, but the staff walked me through everything and the process was simple. They have a full interpretation service if you don’t speak korean, too.

I had a skin evaluation, and then consultation with Dr. Joo. It was really eye opening (and fully humbling) to see my skin like that, and I was open to letting Dr. Joo make recommendations based on his expertise. I do thoroughly research skincare on my own, but there are some things that creams and actives just cannot do.

Unfortunately due to work commitments I couldn’t do the full 3-4 hours of treatment that were recommended, but I’m pleased with the results of my treatment anyway!

treatment:
- rough extraction (not filmed)
removes sebum and other impurities from pores. This was probably the most painful part for me? but i still felt I was in very good and capable hands. 🥲

lasers:
- affirm mpx
🎯 appearance of pores, wrinkles, ptosis, deep nasolabial folds, cervical stripes
- fraxel dual
🎯 appearance of scarring, wrinkles, ptosis, deep nasolabial folds, cervical stripes
- new accolade
🎯 pigmented lesions
- excel v
🎯 pigmented lesions, vascular lesions, elastic lesion
-revlite c7
🎯 skin surface, wrinkles, scarring, pigmented lesion, pimple pigmentation

other: HA filler, front cheek (volume)

thoughts:
the pain was less than i’d thought it would be… though I do have quite a high pain tolerance. I experienced some of the expected scabbing during the next two days as the skin healed, and took the recommended medication to help with the healing process.

after 2 weeks:
my skin does have less redness, especially around my nose, and the surface texture looks better! I’ve had a lot of compliments on how my skin is looking recently (despite the cold) so overall I am very pleased. :)

If you have any questions, let me know and i’ll answer as best i can :)

good morning from the chilly riverside~ even tho good morning from the chilly riverside~

even though the weather these days is getting less than toasty (haha), I have been making use of the Seoul bike rental program!
Ttareungi (따릉기) is super easy to use, you do need an app and internet connection, but the user interface is really intuitive, and you can use it in korean or english. The map tells you how many bikes are at any given location, and renting one is a simple as scanning the qr code on the back, paying 2000 won for 2 hours (1000won for 1 hour, 5000won whole day) and peddling off 💖

(as someone who is terrified of doing something wrong, I was really happy with how easy both rental and return is.) You don’t need an account to use them either.

(toast isn’t the biggest fan, but he doesn’t like bikes so i’ll give him a pass)

a night(tour) at the museum! The Gyeongbok palac a night(tour) at the museum!

The Gyeongbok palace night tour is a popular attraction over the summer months, but did you know the National Museum offers guided tours too?

I went on a guided tour of the museum garden recently, and saw a lot of really interesting structures and treasures of note. Plus it’s nice to spend time outside with the autumn leaves (peak time will probably be around next week!)

entry to the museum is free, and there are a few different tours you can do both inside and outside of it :)

(don’t worry it’s not real! - but it is part of the kcontent festival happening at the 세빛섬 / floating islands at banpo han river park.

The whale is from Extraordinary Attorney Woo, and you can also see Younghee from Squid Game, and one of the cells from Yumi’s Cells (admittedly I haven’t seen that one…)

There are other games you can play too, and if you go on a weekend you can craft your own whale)

:) The festival runs until september 30th! ))

if you’re struggling to reapply your sunscreen t if you’re struggling to reapply your sunscreen throughout the day, then I really suggest you switch so a sun stick. They’re incredibly portable, and, most importantly, no mess!!! The amount of times I’ve had sunscreen explode in my bag…

This sun stick from @marynmay_official is great for on the go application. It contains peptides and bakuchiol, which are great for helping your skin fight off free radicals that can damage your skin. It’s not greasy, and wears well under makeup.

It’s been such a great addition to my bag that I actually almost forgot to take it out to make this reel 🥲😅

Thanks to the Seoul Hallyu Activites Program I got to go to CJ The Kitchen and experience making Kimbap for the first time ❤️

It wasn’t all smooth sailing but our teacher said my kimbap rolling skills were good 🥹 which … well you can judge for yourself 😂

It was a lot of fun, and there are a lot of different activities to try out on the Hallyu program that unfortunately I didn’t get to do because of my work schedule. You can take dance classes with YGX, craft making classes, go to SBS The Show, or make Korean liquor or kimchi.

🌺 flower festival season is upon us 🌸 Cher 🌺 flower festival season is upon us 🌸

Cherry blossoms are probably the most famous flower festival that happens across the country (there are some amazing spots in seoul for seeing them) - but there are a lot of other festivals for different flowers too!
(I have them saved on my naver maps under orange hearts so that I can see them easily)

At the moment, canola flowers (유채꽃) are in full bloom (they’re a spring flower in Korea) and there are a couple of great places to see them in all their glory in Seoul.

One of them is Seorae Island (서래섬), between shinbanpo station (신반포역) and gubanpo station (구반포역). It’s a small island covered in Canola flowers, with a pretty Han river view.

Seorae village (서래마을), the french quarter, isn’t far away either, so you can treat yourself to some french pastries after visiting, or get yourself a full picnic spread.

(Even though the festival is technically over now, you’ll still be able to see the flowers for a bit longer ^^)

Other flower festivals happening soon are:

🥀 rose festival in jungnang-gu (중랑구)
🥀 seoul grand park rose garden festival

📌 서래섬 - about a 15 minute walk from 구반포역 exit 2, or 신반포역 exit 1
(40 Sinbanpo-to 11-gil, Seocho-gu, Seoul)
🌼 The festival runs from may 12-21st and entry is free!
